The monastery of St Maroun on the Orontes - Hermel The monastery was originally a natural cave consisting of three sections, it was expanded by Roman builders working in nearby stone quarries. It is situated above Ain El Zarqa, one of the sources of the Orontes River, and connected to the river via a corridor carved into the mountainside. This was used to fetch water and provide a hiding place during enemy attacks. In the VIth century, Maronite monks sought refuge in the cave after facing persecution in northern Syria, where their monastery was destroyed and its contents dispersed. The monks expanded the cave and carved an altar, turning the cave into a new monastery. This marked the beginning of the Maronite migration to the mountains of Lebanon along the Orontes River. Over time, the monastery was neglected and became an abandoned farm. In 2011, it was visited by Patriarch Bechara Boutros Al-Rahi and has since been restored in 2018, returning to the Maronite Church. The monastery serves as a testament to the spread and perseverance of the Maronite Church in the Levant.

بُنيت الكنيسة الأولى في القرن الثاني عشر. سنة ١٨٨٥ قرر الأهالي تشييد كنيسة جديدة. سنة ١٨٩٧ إنتهى بناء الكنيسة الجديدة. زيّن الكنيسة بالجداريّات الفنّان راجي دانيال السرعلي، سنة ١٩٥٥، وسنة ٢٠٠٢ رمّم اللوحات وزاد عليها الفنان حبيب خوري. رتّلت فيها السيّدة فيروز أناشيد الفصح سنة ٢٠١٠. تضمّ الكنيسة جثمان كاهنها الخوري يوسف أبي مارون معتوق الذي اشتهر بقداسة السيرة وبقي جسده سالمًا من الفساد.

The church of St Michael - Sereel

The first church was built in the XIIth century, and in 1889 the new church was built on top of it. The church was decorated with frescoes in 1955 by Daniel el Seraaly. In 2002 the frescoes were renovated and added upon by Habib Khoury. In 2012 Fairouz chose the church to sing the easter hymns. The church holds the remains of Fr Youssef Abi Maroun Maatouk who was a saintly figure and his body was incorruptible.

بُنبيت الكنيسة الأولى أوائل القرن التاسع عشر، وأُعيد بناء الحاليّة سنة ١٩١٠. الكنيسة كناية عن عقدٍ مُصالبٍ ينتهي بحنية نصف دائريّة. مذبح الكنيسة من الحجر الأصفر مبنيّ سنة ١٩١٢. بعد الحرب الأهليّة اللبنانيّة نزح القسم الأكبر من مسيحيّي البلدة فأصبحت الكنيسة شبه مهجورة. زارها غبطة البطريرك مار بشارة بطرس الراعي صيف سنة ٢٠١١.

The church of St George - Hasbaya

The first church was built in the early XIXth century, and rebuilt in 1910. The structure consists of a crossed vault ending with a semi circular apse. The altar is made of a local yellow limestone in 1912. After the civil war the town’s maronite population left in great numbers and the church became partially abandoned. The Patriarch Bechara el Rai visited the church in the summer of 2011.

سنة ١٩٠٤ قُسِّمت كنيسة مار جرجس بين آل الراعي وآل الريّس. فقرّر يوسف الريّس البقاء مع أخواله في الكنيسة القديمة، لكنّه عاد سنة ١٩٠٦ وقرّر إنشاء كنيسة جديدة لمار جرجس مع عددٍ من عائلات البلدة. بقيت هذه الكنيسة مًقفلة حتّى ستينيّات القرن العشرين حين أّعيد افتتاحها وتكريسها على إسم مار الياس. الكنيسة مسقوفة وتحوي ثلاث حنايا. تضمّ الكنيسة ساعة طنّانة، وتحوي لوحةُ من عمل حبيب سرور.

The church of St Elijah - Hemlaya

In 1904 the old St George’s church was divided between the Rahi and the Rayess families. Back then Youssef El Rayess decided to stay with his uncles, yet in 1906 he decided to build a new church dedicated to St George with a number of the village’s families. This church remained closed until the sixties when it was rededicated to St Elijah. The church is a roofed structure with three apses, it holds a clocktower and contains a painting of St Elijah by Habib Srour.
