A beautiful Romanesque church, Eglise Saint Jean Marc is the cathedral church of Jbail-Byblos. The Church is dedicated to Saint Jean Mark, the patron saint of the town, who is said to have founded the first Christian community of Byblos. The church itself was built in 1115 A.D by the Crusaders, originally as the Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist. After their departure, earthquakes, invasions and other disasters have repeatedly damaged the structure, and for a few centuries it remained disused. In 1764, Emir Youssef Chehab, of the Druze dynasty that ruled a semi- autonomous Lebanon under the Ottomans, donated the church to L’Ordre Libanais Maronite (Lebanese Maronite Order) which subsequently restored and reopened in 1776 after re-dedicating it to St Jean Marc. British bombardments of Lebanon in 1840 caused further damage, but the church was restored yet again. Eglise Saint Jean Marc continues to serve the Maronite Christian community. One interesting feature in the church is its open- air domed baptistery on the northern side which dates from the original construction in 1115 A.D, The church is situated on Rue de Port, between the port and the archaeological area.

Our Lady of the Assumption - Baskinta

The first church dates back to the VIIth century, yet it was destroyed with the Mamluk’s invasion in the XIIIth century. The church was rebuilt in 1650, and renewed in 1712. In 1911 the high altar was gilded. The church was renewed several times during its long history: 1907, 1974, and 2001. In 1912 a narthex was added with an Antipendium. The church is in a basilical plan and divided by three naves: Our Lady’s with a Madonna painting drawn by Boutros el Qobrsy the Lebanese Cypriot monk and the first known painter in Mount Lebanon, St John the baptist, and St George. This church is the oldest in Baskinta, in earlier times the naves where divided between the village's Christian communities: the Maronites, the Melkite, and the Greek Orthodox.

The old monastery of Prophet Elishah - Bcharre

The monastery is situated in the holy valley of Qannoubin, on a cliff underneath the city of Bcharre. The oldest signs of it’s existence date back to 1315 when it was the seat of Bcharre’s bishops.
In 1643 it was the headquarters of the Carmelites, the first western missionaries to the Maronites.
In 1644 the saintly hermit Francois de Chasteuil died and was buried in the monastic church.
The newly founded Lebanese Aleppan Maronite took the monastery as it’s headquarter in 1695 and bought the icon of Prophet Elishah from Aleppo. On the 10th of November 1698 the first monastic council was held and the new monastic rules where promulgated. They where later acknowledged by Pope Clement XII who gave the monastery a tabernacle and a relic of St Maroun.
The monastery was used as a hermitage after the construction of the new monastery in 1874. The last of the hermits was Father Antonios Torbey (+1998). The monastery is now a shrine for pilgrims who seek solitude.
